It’s the third week of December, and CertaPet is back with yet another installment of our newsletter. Our new report this week highlights a happy reunion of a Service Dog and its handler. The canine was missing for more than thirty days, but as luck would have it, shelter volunteers were able to link the dog to a missing canine post on Facebook.
Missing Service Dog In Michigan Reunited With Its Owner Thanks To A Facebook Post
Dezseray McClusky’s Service Dog, Kiwi, went missing around Halloween. The search for Kiwi went on for days in Livingston County; however, the dog was found in Genesee County after running off. Reports suggest the canine was adopted after being picked up by the Genesee County Animal Control.
However, Kiwi was recently returned to the shelter, and soon after, a Facebook post about the lost Service Dog caught the attention of Beth Hanson, a shelter volunteer.
Hanson stated, “I saw a Pawboost post with this dog on it and I said, boy, that looks like Venus. That was her name here at the shelter.” After that, she acted on her gut instinct and contacted Dezseray McClusky with pictures of Kiwi.
When McClusky saw the pictures and spoke with Hanson, she was elated. She was almost sure the canine in the photographs was Kiwi. McClusky immediately made plans to see the dog the very next day. She said, “It was surreal, it didn’t feel real at first. It was equal to the feeling of bringing my children home from the hospital the day I brought them home.”
McClusky calls the return of Kiwi her Christmas miracle and reports the canine picked up her Service Dog training immediately and help saved her when she suffered a seizure. Kiwi has been microchipped to ensure that if the pup runs off again, she’s found immediately after.

CertaPet’s Thoughts on This Week’s News
This week’s news item brings to light why microchipping Service Dogs, ESAs, and pets is extremely important. Dogs, even highly trained ones, are prone to running off. Moreover, there’s been a steady rise in dognapping cases in recent months.
While microchip implants still don’t have GPS abilities, they can help identify a pet and reveal its owner’s details. Dog owners can also invest in canine GPS trackers to monitor their pets’ movements at all times. The cost of these solutions may seem a little troublesome at first, but they can go a long way in making your lives easier.
